Dear Moms to be,

 

Planning to have a baby come into your life is an exciting time, but also a challenging one.

Have you ever snapped your partner or parents for not making something you wanted in dinner? Have you ever shouted on your elder children for no reason? Have you ever felt like crying out loud and felt that your mind is flooded with irrational thoughts, fear, dilemmas, doubts? From that annoying morning sickness to unbearable mood swings, you will have a handful of trivial challenges to deal with. 

 

Don’t be surprised if you experience some emotional change at this time. Changing emotions are in pregnancy for most women, one of the most common side effects during pregnancy. It can be frustrating and exhausting to shift from one emotion to another and be unable to explain what emotion you are feeling and why. For those who were not very emotional prior to pregnancy, this onslaught of pregnancy emotions may be especially startling. First, its important to remind yourself not to feel guilty or ashamed if you are in a particular emotional state. Heightened pregnancy emotions are to be expected. Though pregnancy can be challenging for both parents, in many cases the pregnant woman experiences the greatest amount of strain.

 

 

 

Emotional instability can be because of various reasons, internal or external factors might play a major role but it does not mean you are going “crazy” or “mad”. Hormonal disturbance, stress, body changes, anxiety, alcohol consumption, environmental hazards, relationship problems, irrational thoughts, future oriented thinking, engaging in proactive drug, diseases, societal pressure and various other issues lead to emotional disturbance. While pregnancy often elicits many positive emotions, it can also cause a woman to experience negative thoughts and feelings.

 

The key is knowing the difference between normal mood disturbance which is not affecting your day to day life and emotional instability which is being a major interruption in your daily activities and causes distress. Emotional state of every women varies but you and your significant others are the key to determine what is normal and what is not normal for you. When you experience intense fear, anxieties and other negative emotions, physiological changes may occur that can affect foetus too (Entringer & Entringer, 2009).

 

Although prenatal care varies enormously, it usually involves a defined schedule of visits for medical care, which typically includes screening for manageable conditions and treatable diseases that can affect the baby or the baby (Lu & Lu, 2008). Apart from all the services, prenatal and post natal counselling and primary, secondary and tertiary preventions is something you and your family should be aware off.  According to Shannon Kane, owner of Birth Narratives Counselling in Calgary, the transition to parenthood can result in “a lot of joy mixed in with loss and fear.” Speaking to a counsellor helps women sort through these conflicting emotions, bolstering mental wellness, developing well-being while baby is still in the womb. But it’s not just for soon-to-be moms—it’s also great for partners and for families with another kids. Face to face sessions, chat therapy, speaking to counsellor on all even once is sometimes enough to help parents notice the resources or skills they have to deal with pregnancy and parenting.

 

Therapy can help expectant mothers, women who are facing postpartum concerns, and the partners of these women to address the various issues that pregnancy and childbirth are likely to cause. Women who experienced mental health issues before pregnancy may fear that the added challenge of motherhood will exacerbate their conditions or cause further concerns to develop, but the support of a therapist or counsellor throughout their pregnancy may help them feel more at ease. Women who experience postpartum depression or psychosis may find that that therapeutic treatment, combined with medication when necessary, has a beneficial effect.

 

There are some tips you can follow to manage emotional instability:

  • quality sleep

  • maintain healthy lifestyle

  • reconnect with your partner

  • meditate

  • remove conflicts and stress

  • engage in activities you love

  • talk it through

  • ask for professional help

The type of therapy used will generally vary based on the concerns a woman is experiencing. Some women find the stress of motherhood and new responsibilities to be difficult to handle and voicing their concerns in a support group to others in the same situation may be helpful to them. 

 

Pregnancy is the most beautiful period in a woman’s life. Once you’re pregnant, you are full of joy, hope & anxiety. People shower you with blessings, advices & that extra attention that makes you feel special. Keeping yourself happy during all the 3 trimesters is entirely up to you. It is essential to be happy & feel joyful while pregnant, as your emotional well-being directly affects baby’s neurological & psychological development.
